Rth9580wf - honeywell smart wifi thermostat
Honeywell has just released the retail version of the prestige....
Nice. Look like this one does not require a Honeywell internet gateway.
I bought one of these from Home Depot and installed it. The install and set up were easy. The app worked fine on both my Android phone and my wife's iPhone. Unfortunately, the unit had a major issue - the thermometer was way off. I noticed that the house seemed warmer after installing this unit, so I got out my old Honeywell and put batteries back in it and got another digital thermometer as well. While the thermostat displayed 72, the temperature on the other devices showed 78. I eventually got the house to 72 by setting the thermostat to 65. I called Honeywell and they said they hadn't heard of this issue. They suggested I exchange it for another one. Then I went to the Home Depot site and saw where another person was having a similar issue. I decided to just return it and reinstall the old unit.
I would buy this unit again if I knew this issue was resolved.
A couple of other things I noticed - the internet connection that gets the local weather has an issue - thermostat says "waiting for update". Honeywell is aware of this so I assume they will push an update to fix it. Also, there is no way to adjust or disable the compressor protection feature - it is hard set to 5 minutes.

Page 63 of the owners manual states that you can change the display to match what you think your home temperature is.... so you really returned it for no reason.... you simply didn't read the whole manual (no one does).
The compressor protection should be non-adjustable, IMO. 5 minutes is the correct amount of time to guarantee compressor safety and protection. If you wanted to change this then you should get the professional version. I can understand why HW would not include a setting to change the compressor protection on a homeowner based version of the stat because most homeowners would not know what it is.
Actually, I did read that and tried to adjust it. It only allows a +-3 degree change and it was off by 7 degrees. I think the 5 minute delay would have been fine had the unit been working properly but the temperature reading was all over the place. Maybe it's a software issue.

I wonder if the fact these units are so close to the wall could be causing this. My old thermostat (Honeywell CT3400) mounts to a base that's 3/4" thick. The front of the unit is 2" from the wall. On these 9580s, the base is much thinner and the unit is almost touching the wall. Could this account for the temperature variance?
