    Your reference to the manual for the LTX500U refers to the manual for the TX500E, not the TX500U. These are different thermostats. The TX500E is battery only, while the TX500U is battery backup - it can use AC power from the furnace. They also look totally different. The TX500E uses a knob to control it while the TX500U uses sliding switches. I am guessing that the L in LTX500U only refers to Lux and does not change the real model number that is TX500U.
