From the manual it appears it could heat downstairs then cool upstairs depending on the auto changeover delay setting.

    Auto Changeover Delay / CHANGEOVER DELAY[15] 20 30 MIN / 15 minutes auto changeover timer /
Number of minutes to delay auto changeover when one zone is calling for heat and another is calling for cooling.

Surely your installer walked you through all of this?

If it's cold enough outside to need heat downstairs, just open a window upstairs if it's too hot up there
Running cool upstairs and heat downstairs is a total waste of energy.

I was there when he set up the changeover delay on the zone control board, but we did not talk specifically about this option. Sounds like the Zone control board handles the scenario (although I'm not certain how it decides whether to heat or cool if competing signals come in from the 2 T-Stats). Thanks for pointing out that setting.

I totally agree! that's actually what I ended up doing last night. It was getting really warm inside, especially upstairs; so I opened the window.
