What a horrible design flaw, not being able to use AUX and EMERGENCY heat without reconfiguring the thermostat. Even the most basic of heat pump thermostats can handle this function, yet the $249 Nest cannot?

That was a head scratcher for the visiting tech as well.

The shine on the Nest has definitely been tarnished in my eyes and I have to imagine it's a common story with owners that have my kind of system. I worry that I am throwing money out the window because the Nest cannot handle my basic configuration and have begun researching the Honeywells to see which may be the right kind for me. Home Depot is running a sale on the bare bones wifi model (RTH6580WF) http://www.homedepot.com/p/Honeywell...c4lfZqrZ25ecod

If it can handle my system better than the Nest: That is, if I can have Aux and Emergency heat as an option without having to reprogram the designation of the designated wire then I'll go out this second and get it.

The RTH6580WF will work for your system, but it has no provision to control your humidifier.... which is fine if you continue using a separate humidistat.

The Ecobee can be had for about what you gave for the Nest and it will control your humidifier. Ecobee can even be programmed to adjust the humidity based on the outdoor tempature.
I can't think of a heat pump thermostat other than Nest that cannot handle the AUX/EMERGENCY heat setup. It's a basic function of any ordinary heat pump thermostat that Nest totally missed the boat on.
